Day hospital case files, 1956-1959.

Under the supervision of the Dept. of Mental Health, the Massachusetts Mental Health Center and its predecessors have been responsible for providing residential and outpatient care and treatment for mentally ill persons--prior to 1967 specializing in acute psychotic disorders and since then serving more generally the Boston metropolitan area. In 1952 a community clinic was established to supervise rehabilitation and community readjustment for discharged inpatients. From 1956 a day program (known from 1957 as the day hospital) provided such patients with severe readjustment problems with continuous care at the hospital during weekdays, including individual or group psychotherapy and hospital employment. Case files document patients in the program.
